Overview

Literature builds worlds. It can change society. It affects how we think and inspires our dreams. To read literature is to gain understanding of the world around us; its history, its inequalities, its values, as well as the relationships between peoples and different places.

On English Literature at Oxford Brookes, we ask the big questions that writers across the centuries have asked themselves. You’ll encounter the literary figures, ideas and movements that have shaped culture over centuries. Whether studying the Renaissance or contemporary literature, you’ll immerse yourself in texts and subject them to rigorous analysis.

Your tutors will help you master the latest methods of literary criticism, and keep you up-to-date on how the field is adapting to new ideas and ways of reading. You’ll gain key academic and analytical skills that help you understand your place in the world – whether you’re examining the global challenges of today or breathing the air of past times.

Whatever you do after your time with us, we’ll equip you to make a difference to the world you share.
